For Authors, What Does 'Not Well Written' Actually Mean?

I recently had one of my tween stories given a review and that is what it said. It was not well written. But not well written compared to what? A literary masterpiece? It’s a tween story for god’s sake.

The review didn’t mention spelling, grammar, maturity, issues with the story etc, so not well written means what exactly? You could look at 100 books and none of them will be literary masterpieces. They will be written as well as the author can write it, but then that still may not be good enough for some people.

By what standards are they using? Their own? Not well written compared to their books? Their English skills? Clearly some people just expect everything to be a masterpiece. Except people don’t write like that. That’s right, NO ONE writes literary masterpieces without help. The very few books that become literary masterpieces are beaten to a bloody pulp by countless editors telling the authors what to write. So what do us mere mortal authors do? Do we write to the best of our ability and stick to that, or do we ask the reviewers to expand on their comments so we can get some idea of what they thought was wrong with it in case there actually was something wrong with it? Of course, it could just all be in their own head.

It’s a real pity there wasn’t more to the review than just, not well written.

At the end of the day what does not well written actually mean, coz I’m confused?

Author Versus Writer. What do either really equate to?

There have been a lot of blog posts and columns about this topic, so I’m going to weigh in myself.

Some people believe that authors are not writers and vice versa.

Some people believe that writers are not authors and vice versa.

Some people think you can be both.

I think that each word/title means something a little different.

To me, a writer is someone who writes different things across different areas, mainly non-fiction columns, blog posts, web stories, magazine articles etc. They are writing, so they can use the label writer.

To me, an author is someone who writes books, fiction or non-fiction. Yes, they are a writer, but since the primary object is books, to me, the title of author seems more fitting.

To me, a novelist is someone who writes novels. Hence the title, novelist.

To me, a blogger is someone who blogs. Hence the title blogger.

To me, a columnist is someone who writes magazine/newspaper columns. Hence the title, columnist.

Get the picture?

I think it all means something to everyone and I also think it depends on what you write. If you do a bit of everything, go ahead and call yourself a writer. But I don’t necessarily think an author needs to call themselves a writer even though they write.

To me, that would be like calling a reality show contestant a celebrity…

ah *shudders*

It's all much of a muchness and what you want to call yourself is up to you, just make sure it has some authenticity to it.

One Author's Writing Schedule and How It's All Planned Out.

Some of you have marvelled at how I can do all I do so today I'm going to show you. With my three weeks off for school holidays and Easter, I decided to write it all down so you can see how I do it all. It's really no different to running any other business. Everything needs planning out across different days and that's how it all gets done. So here we go...

Friday 14th - First edit of new Porn Stars book, Forever. Spelling, corrections, adding extra stuff, researching and re-arranging if necessary. It took all day coz it’s huge and I only got to chapter 22 by about 9pm.

Saturday 15th - Pottered around taking photos for Jewel Divas Style blog posts and general tidying up.

Sunday 16th - Did some paperwork in the morning and then the second half of the first edit of Forever. Glad I had the time off between writing this book and then typing it up to now editing it. It’s kept it fresh instead of me drowning in it. I’ll keep it fresher by now typing up T.K. Wrathbone stories.

Monday 17th - Typed up first T.K. Wrathbone book for the year.

Tuesday 18th - Washed my bed sheets and typed up the first 25 pages of the second T.K. Wrathbone book for the year. Got Poems #4 ready for typesetting and did some adjusting of Poems #1 and #2.

Wednesday 19th - Finished typing up the second T.K. Wrathbone book for the year, got ready for Thursday.

Thursday 20th - Shopping, bill paying, resting etc, arguments with mum *eyeroll*. Proofed Poems #3 all night and got MS doc ready with issues. Got some online shopping done and bought a handbag.

Friday 21st - Typed up third T.K. Wrathbone book for the year. Did some adjusting for Poems #3, got MS doc ready with corrections, and sent off docs for editing.

Saturday 22nd - Got some washing done. Started the second edit of Forever, first half of book, adding more, re-arranging, spelling etc.

Sunday 23rd - Finished the second edit of Forever, second half of book, adding more, re-arranging, spelling etc.

Monday 24th - Did the dishes and then started the first edits of all three T.K. Wrathbone books. Also did some paperwork and faffed around online researching things for the stories like names and dates. Tired! Listened to Train on my iPod for the rest of the night.

Tuesday 25th - Took photos for my Jewel Divas Style blog, did some paperwork and a whole bunch of reformatting for all of my books.

Wednesday 26th – Watched tv and took it easy.

Thursday 27th - All day shopping, bill paying, resting etc. I needed to rest, I went to the chiro and she cracked the crap out of my neck it was that badly twisted, thanks to waking up in the middle of the night with bulging pain in my neck…

Friday 28th – Got the Jewel Divas Style blog posts done, especially the April’s Style post.

Saturday 28th - Third edit of Forever, full book, adding more, re-arranging, spelling etc.

Sunday 30th - Did some washing, edited other Porn Stars documents.

Monday 1st – Uploaded Poems #3 to all accounts, did blog posts to coincide etc.

Tuesday 2nd – Dealt with the gardener. Finished off different things for future posts and websites.

Wednesday 3rd – Did third edit of all three T.K. Wrathbone books. Made sure they were ready for sending off to my editor for assessment. Pottered around online.

Thursday 4th - All day shopping, bill paying, resting etc. Schedule this blog post.

Friday 5th - Plan what’s next!

And there you have it. That's how I get it all done.
